My Sewing Room

My Sewing Room

Posted in CraftingSewing

I hope you’re not reading this post in the expectation that you will see a host of lovely bright pictures of a beautifully laid out sewing room. I am very fortunate, our house has enough rooms to allow me to have a dedicated room for my sewing and crafting supplies and machinery, however I have been completely abusing this privileged and it looks somewhat like a tip. I could hardly get in the door.

Here is  a picture of my main work table/cutting mat…..seriously, it’s in there somewhere…..

Messy Table

I’m too embarrassed to take any pictures of the other half of the room!

I am in need of a bit of a re-focus on the work front so I decided, rather than just diving into something new, that I would start with a tidy ‘desk’ in the hope that it will provide me with a tidy mind too.

This is how my work table looked after 2 hours of sorting through things (yes, 2 hours!).

Tidy desk, tidy mind

It was a sheer pleasure to walk into the room to see such a clear desk.

Tidy desk, tidy mind

My plan is to tackle the other half of the room (and the walls in between) over the next week. Wish me lots of luck, I’m going to need it!

How about you, what’s your work space like? Are you neat and tidy and pack things away as you go or do you manage to create a grotty mess like I do?

  • Ha ha, welcome to my world. Like you I am lucky enough to have a dedicated work room at home. I have my sewing machines in here, my embarassingly large stash of fabric, tons of craft supplies, a light box etc etc. But it is also my place of work (I’m a freelance graphic designer) so it also houses my computer and all the detritus that goes with that side of my life. The fact that these two worlds meet in the same room (a very small room) is a complete disaster. Most days I literally shimmy to my computer desk. Feels so good to have a clear out though doesn’t it? I just wish the effect would last a bit longer than it ever does!

    • Oh Ceri, I can just picture it! Luckily my laptop/printer/scanner etc are in a separate room to my sewing ‘stuff’, although sadly the ‘office’ is as much in need of an overhaul…there is paperwork everywhere!

  • My work space is my kitchen table, which is usually already overflowing with magazines (I signed up for a news magazine (yes, really, I suck at keeping up on the latest internet posts), and “fluffy” magazine and then I signed up for a professional organization and they send me three magazines, and then I joined the trails association and they send me a magazine, and then I buy Real Change, etc.) I cut things on the living room floor, but sometimes it’s too dirty and I don’t feel like scaring the cats by vacuuming, so then I spread out on what’s left of the kitchen floor. I sometimes leave my ironing board set up in the living room, even though it’s a little hazardous. Right now it not only has my iron but a bunch of pieces I’ve cut out. The piece of fabric I need to iron & cut up is on the back of a chair.

    Sorry, that was long-winded.

(To clarify: I live in an apartment, so there isn’t a ton of room)

    • Oh, I love it Jess….true commitment to being creative and spending as little time as possible tidying up, definitely the way forward!
