Christmas Elf FPP Cushions

These Christmas Elf FPP Cushions are just the perfect project for adding some seriously cute Christmas Cheer into your home. Father Christmas gets most of the credit, but let’s be honest, I’m pretty sure he would struggle to get everything done without his team of Christmas Elves!

These cushions are rather special and you will be able to bring them out year after year. You really will be making heirlooms of Christmas future!

These Christmas Elf FPP Cushions are such a fun patchwork and quilting project. The central Foundation Paper Pieced 10″ block then has a border added around the outside to make a cushion/pillow that measures approximately 14″ square when finished.

You can use plain fabrics as I have done here or you can go to town and use some fabulous Christmas prints for the Elves’ hats and for the border. I have chosen a great striped fabric for the piping, but you can use a plain fabric or leave the piping off altogether.

Boy and Girl Christmas Elf FPP Cushions

Whilst this pattern is for creating Christmas cushions, the 10″ quilt blocks can be used in any number of other Christmas themed projects. I have one customer that is combining all the cushion patterns together to create a rather fabulous Christmas quilt!

Flex Your Quilting Skills

One of the things I love so much about these cushion/pillow projects is that they are a fabulous opportunity to work on your quilting skills. Larger projects can be quite cumbersome and often a little bit dauting to work on, so smaller projects such as these are just perfect. The smaller size means that they are easier to manoeuvre under your sewing machine, allowing you to try out some new or less often used skills.

For these two Christmas Elf cushions I have done the following:

  • Walking Foot quilting in the background and around the borders
  • Free motion stitching to give texture to the hair and the bobble on the end of the hat
  • Decorative machine stitch to add snowflakes to the hat
  • Echo stitching to outline the hat trim

I have also used hand embroidery for the rosy cheeks, the mouth and the eyebrows! If you wanted to you could also hand stitch the eyes and nose or even sew on some circles of felt.

The there are so many ways in which you can personalise your Christmas Elves!

Elevate Your Project

You may have noticed that all of my Christmas cushion designs feature piping. I do love a cushion with piping as it really sets it off and takes your project to the next level.

There are instructions included for adding piping to your cushion but I also have a great free tutorial with lots of step-by-step photos to help you get a great shape to your corners.
