NEW: Economy Block FPP Templates

The Economy Block is a super versatile block. It can be used really effectively on its own but can also work wonders when combined with other blocks. In both cases Economy Blocks can create some really super secondary patterns.

As the name suggests, Economy Blocks can be very economical with fabric usage but those central squares are crying out for some fussy cutting! Just think of all of those cute prints that you have in your stash ready and waiting to be put to good use.

Single Economy Block

In quilting, as with so many quilt block types, there is more than one way to make an Economy Block. If you love precision points but don’t like all the precision cutting and measuring then FPP templates may just be the method for you!

By using Foundation Paper Piecing Templates you can create Economy Blocks that are perfect every time…all you need to do is to sew on the line!

Here's more about these FPP Templates...

These Economy Block Foundation Paper Piecing Templates are a downloadable pdf file that you can print at home. The templates have been laid out in a way that means that they can be printed out on Letter or A4 paper without any parts ‘falling off the edge of the page’, just remember to print actual size!

The file includes templates in six different sizes, which means that you have lots of different options available.

Whilst the smallest size is just 1″ square, don’t let that put you off, the process of making it is just the same as the largest 6″ version!

Each block size has been laid out on its own page so that you can just print out the page(s) that you need.

To make life easier, the smaller block sizes have multiple templates on the page.

Each page has a 1″ test square on it, so make sure you check that before you print out multiple pages or start to sew.

The Perfect Paper for Foundation Paper Piecing

When you are printing out your own FPP templates you essentially have two options available to you. You can use standard printer paper or specialist foundation paper. As to which one is perfect, then the choice is yours. Give both a try and work out what is best for you!

If you are using standard printer paper I would suggest using the cheap stuff. You are not looking for high quality super smooth here, you are after lightweight…something 80gsm or lighter.

If you have not used it before then specialist Foundation Paper is wonderful to use. It is more lightweight than standard printer paper and it is easier to see through. Whilst it is easier to remove at the end, it stays in place really well until you’re ready!

I can highly recommend the Foundation Paper from patterntrace. The white colour means that it is easy to see through, even without a light box or holding it up to a window. One of the other great things is that it comes in A4 size (which avoids me having to change my printer settings).
