Nutcracker : FPP Quilt Block

The Nutcracker FPP quilt block pdf pattern includes two finished block sizes: 6″ and 10″. The eyes and nose can be added with small buttons or with appliqué circles (templates and layout guide included). The mouth and eyebrows are added with a backstitch.

The pdf INSTRUCTIONS feature:

:: Coloured illustration of the block
:: Blank diagram and key for colouring and/or planning fabric placement
:: Diagrams for joining the FPP sections, including where it is important to match seams
:: Guidance on printing the pattern pieces the correct size

The PATTERN PIECES feature:

:: Digitally drawn pattern pieces
:: 1/4″ seam allowances on all sections
:: Reversed so you create a block that looks exactly as the illustration (with the Nutcracker leaning to the left)
:: Applique templates for eyes and nose (optional)
:: Coloured and labelled to make construction as easy as possible
:: Laid out to print on A4 or US Letter paper

DIFFICULTY

This pattern for the Nutcracker FPP quilt block is for people that are familiar with Foundation Paper Piecing. This pattern features the same block in two different sizes. The 10″ version is definitely the easier of the two as the pieces are larger in size.

The 6″ block is more challenging, particularly around the moustache. You will benefit from the use of an ‘add an eighth’ ruler, but it is not essential. There are only a few smaller pieces to deal with.

There are several places where it would be good if seams were matched HOWEVER…the seam where the moustache is joined will be hidden by a button or applique for the nose!
