NEW: Storm at Sea Block FPP Templates

The Storm at Sea is a quilt design that gives the illusion of curves in your work, even though it only involves sewing in straight lines (which I know will be a relief to some people!). It’s a simple enough design made from just two block styles but their combination tricks the eye into believing that you have been busy sewing curves.

The Storm at Sea uses only Economy Blocks and Diamonds in Rectangles but it’s the combination and arrangement of squares and rectangles that creates the clever design.

Storm at Sea Size 2 4x4 grid

You can of course piece your Economy Blocks and Diamond in a Rectangle Blocks using traditional methods, but there are a fair few bias edges and let’s be honest, I like to avoid working with them if I can!

This is where the Storm at Sea FPP templates come in handy. The templates allow you to create Economy Blocks and Diamonds in Rectangles that are pretty perfect every time…all you need to do is to sew on the line!

Here's more about the FPP Templates...

The Storm at Sea Templates are a downloadable pdf file that you can print at home.

There are two different layout options when working with the Storm at Sea design:

  • 3×3 grid
  • 4×4 grid
Storm at Sea Grid Comparison

You can see from the image above that the 4×4 grid is based on the 3×3 grid, but with an additional column to the right and an additional row on the bottom. The grid style you choose to work with will depend on the overall design that you are looking to achieve. If you have not chosen your design yet, then download the FREE Storm at Sea Colouring Pages as there are a number of different layouts for you to look at (there’s more info below).

You are able to make 3 different sizes of Storm at Sea unit with these FPP Templates. The overall size of the square unit will depend on whether you have chosen the 3×3 or 4×4 grid layout.

Storm at Sea Finished Unit Sizes

The printable templates have been grouped according to the finished unit size so that you can just print out the page(s) that you need.

The first page of each unit size has a 1″ test square on it, so make sure you check that before you print out multiple pages or start to sew.

The Perfect Paper for Foundation Paper Piecing

If you have ever been taught by me or watched one of my demonstrations then you will know that I am very much of the persuasion that (more often than not) there is more than one way to things in patchwork and quilting. I always think that it’s worth exploring other options to find what works best for you.

It’s no different really when it comes to FPP. You can either sew using standard printer paper or you can use specialist FPP paper. Personally I find FPP paper really great to use, but there are times when standard printer paper will do the trick. Do give both a try and see the difference for yourself.

When it comes to standard printer paper, use the cheap stuff. Choose something 80gsm or lighter if you can find it as it will make it easier to use and easier to remove when you are done stitching.

As I mentioned above, specialist Foundation Paper is wonderful to use. It has been designed to be lightweight yet strong and is easier to see through than standard printer paper.

I like to recommend the Foundation Paper from patterntrace. It is very easy to see through as it is white in colour, meaning that lining up fabrics and fussy cutting is a lot easier. I also love that it comes in A4 sized sheets, which means that I don’t need to change any of my printer settings!
