Triangle in a Square FPP Templates

Use these Triangle in a Square FPP templates to make beautiful and accurate quilt blocks!

Triangle in a Square FPP Templates are such a great way of helping you make the ever so useful Triangle in a Square quilt blocks. This quilt block looks great on its own (perhaps repeated several times over) or combined with other other elements to create other quilt block designs. The way that you place fabric can also totally shift the focus of the block. It really is quite versatile!

The challenge with Triangle in a Square blocks though is that they can be a little tricky to make. The diagonal lines that run through the block to create the larger triangle mean that, if using traditional piecing techniques you have to be very careful of the bias edges. If not treated with care the bias edges can stretch out of place meaning that the resulting block is not quite as square as intended!

This is where using a foundation can really help. The foundation gives you a printed line to sew along and ensures that the fabric stays in the right position. This means that you are much more likely to end up with a perfect quilt block!

Working with templates means you don’t have to worry so much about:

  • overly precise cutting of tricky triangles
  • sewing an accurate 1/4″ seam allowance
  • off setting fabrics when sewing seams*
  • dealing with bias edges

* if you’ve ever sewn Triangle in a Square quilt blocks using traditional piecing you’ll know what this means!

Another wonderful thing about working with templates is that you can create very accurate blocks even on a small scale. Tiny piecing is a skill in itself but using a foundation makes the process a lot easier! Keep an eye out for a YouTube video demo where you can learn how to make this great block.

Learn a little more about these FPP Templates...

The Triangle in a Square FPP templates are a print at home pdf file. The download includes 11 different sizes of Triangle in a Square units. This gives you so many options for all sorts of projects.

All of the templates have a 1/4″ seam allowance included around the outside edges. This means that it is easy to join them with other elements as you would do normally when patchworking.

When working on the smaller block sizes, then it’s a good idea to reduce the ‘inner’ seam allowances (when you are constructing the block) to 1/8″. This makes construction easier and will reduce the amount of bulk created by the excess fabric.

Each of the 11 Triangle in a Square unit sizes have been laid out on its own page so that you can print out just the size you need, which means you are not wasting paper (which is super important if you are using more expensive specialist paper!).

The template pages are designed to print out on A4 or US Letter paper. Simply select ‘Actual Size’ when printing and you should be good to go, regardless of the paper size you are using.

As an extra little bonus, the smaller sizes have multiple templates to a page, which makes things efficient for you if you are making multiple Triangle in a Square blocks.

The instructions include a convenient chart that outlines the Triangle in a Square unit sizes, corresponding sizes and the units per page.
