Great British Sewing Bee :: Series 2, Week 3 Roundup
Week three already and the competition is hotting up! Hope you are enjoying the show as much as I am.
Thank you to everyone following my Great British Sewing Bee pinterest board, if you’ve not checked it out drop on over and have a look, there are lots of links that support the skills learned in the show.
This week is all about S…t…r…e…t…c…h…
Never worked with knits before? Don’t be afraid! Knits are actually quite forgiving and ease quite well (hiding minor mistakes), just make sure you treat them well and don’t pull them out of shape while you sew.
Here are some tutorials for you….
As a starter how about a nice article from Oliver + S that covers the difference between knit and interlock fabric
Sew Mama Sew have some good tips for creating professional results when working with knits
My Pattern Designer has some fabulous tips and a great table for working out your stretch percentages
So, on to the challenges for week 3…
Sewing from a Pattern: Leggings
If you fancy trying to make a pair of leggings for yourself (or for a friend!) then check out this great tutorial from the Etsy Blog. It runs you through how to draft and sew your own leggings
There’s also a great in-depth series of blog posts from Random Happy Blog…very comprehensive
Alteration challenge: Turn an oversized t-shirt into something new
Jess Abbot from Me Sew crazy has 10 ways to transfer a plain white t-shirt
Grey Luster Girl has a whole host of re-fashions and up-cycle projects. I love this t-shirt with a lace overlay and peter pan collar
How about a simple update for a t-shirt? Follow He and Me’s tutorial for a lace insert for a sleeve
or how about something non-garment related…a scarf perhaps? Check out this tutorial from How Does She?
Create a Made to Measure Garment : Stretch Wrap Dress
Wrap dresses can be so flattering. I have a number in my wardrobe but have never actually made one. I think I’ll add one to my to-do list!
There’s a free tutorial over at So Sew Easy.com
Check out the UK Simplicty site at the moment, they are promoting patterns inspired by the Great British Sewing Bee, including this rather familiar mock wrap front dress…David did a good job didn’t he?
Thanks for dropping by, see you again next week for the same again! In the mean time have a look at my Great British Sewing Bee pinterest board

Yet another great episode, and thank you for all your follow up information. I wounded how many people went online to look at a overlocker…I know I did..I want one.
I love my overlocker. It has been sitting around unused for a while, then I made some knit tops for the girls and I can’t seem to put it away!
Thanks for the useful tips and links. I’ve just posted my episode three recap on Random Crafting Adventures. I enjoyed this episode too. I’ve had my overlocker out a lot lately, and I’ve just dipped my toes into the stretch fabric sewing pool. Looking forward to mastering more techniques.
