Here you will discover and explore some of the great layouts that can be achieved with a simple 3 colour 4-patch quilt block, repeated several times over.

As the name suggests, a 3 colour 4-patch quilt block is made up of 4 squares using a total of three colours or prints.
For the illustrations that I am going to share with you I have chosen a lighter pink background colour (which features twice in each block) plus a darker pink and a red which are each featured once in every block.

Structure of Layout Options
All of the layout designs to follow will be based on a grid of 4 blocks across by 4 blocks down. That’s a total of 16 blocks.
You can recreate these layouts using a square layout (using 16 blocks or even more) or you can extrapolate a little to create these designs in a rectangular grid. By using a rectangular grid you will open up even more layout options! For each layout option you will be able to see the following illustrations:
- overall design in a 4×4 block layout
- design with the grid layout laid over the top
- design shown with some yellow arrows to show the orientation of each of the blocks

So there you have it, 11 different layouts that can be created with a simple 3 colour 4-patch quilt block, repeated several times over. You really can look like an expert quilter, whereas in fact these are quite simple designs to make.
If you are working on a rectangular design then there are even more options that you can come up with by simply rotating the whole design.
