Herringbone Strips FPP Templates

Use these FPP Herringbone Strips to make striking and precise accents for your patchwork quilting!

The Herringbone or Prairie Braid design is ideal for adding a stunning and dynamic design feature to your patchwork and quilting projects. Careful placement will allow you to direct the eye around your project.

Herringbone Strips/Prairie Braids look great in so many patchwork and quilting projects:

  • borders
  • feature blocks
  • accent blocks on sampler quilts
  • accent on bags, purses and pouches
  • whole quilts!

Herringbone strips, particularly on a smaller scale, can be tricky to keep in a straight line. This is where these Foundation Paper Piecing templates really come into their own!

Using the Foundation Paper Piecing (FPP) method allows you to keep control of all those rectangles of fabric! All you need to do is sew on the line and a wonderfully precise and straight Herringbone strip is perfectly possible!

Worry LESS about:

  • overly precise cutting of lots of rectangles
  • sewing an accurate 1/4″ seam allowance
  • distorting fabrics when pressing

The process of FPP means that the paper acts as the foundation or stabiliser for your sewing. This greatly reduces the issues that you frequently face when dealing with more intricate designs!

The solid lines on the FPP templates show you exactly where you need to sew. This means you don’t have to spend time worrying about sewing an accurate 1/4″ seam allowance.

For me, the biggest advantage is that there is no need to cut totally precise rectangles to sew with. You can be a little more ‘rough’, cut freehand rectangles (possibly only an option for the more confident) or of course, you can make use of your stash of scraps.

FPP really is a great way of making Herringbone strips!

Here's more about these FPP Templates...

The Herringbone Strips FPP templates are a downloadable pdf file that you can print at home…no trip to the copy store required or waiting for the pattern to arrive in the post! The templates file features 11 different sizes of templates which means there should be strip just the right width for the project you have in mind.

The most narrow of the strips measures just 1″ across. Don’t let that put you off though…tiny piecing is worth the time! The method for construction remains exactly the same. My only piece of advice is to trim your seam allowances back to 1/8″ (rather than the usual 1/4″). This will reduce bulk in your strip and will make sewing and pressing a lot easier.

Each of the 11 strip sizes has its own page (which can be printed out on A4 or US Letter paper). This means you print what you need, meaning that you are not wasting ink or paper.

PLUS the smaller strip sizes have multiple templates to a page, which makes things efficient for you, should you be making multiple or longer strips.

I have put a useful chart on page 3 of the instructions that shows you the Herringbone strip sizes, pages and number of strips per page.

Not quite the right length of strip?

If the template for your chosen size of strip is not the right length for your project then don’t worry. Pages 4 & 5 of the instructions show you can easily alter the strips to your desired length.
