How to Sew: Herringbone FPP Strips

By watching this video demonstration you can learn how to sew Herringbone (or Prairie Braid) strips using Foundation Paper Piecing templates.

You will see how you can make strips that are both beautiful and precise using this great technique.

Where to use Herringbone Strips

Herringbone Strips can look wonderful in a multitude of patchwork & quilting projects:

  • whole quilts
  • borders on quilts
  • accent blocks, especially on sampler style quilts
  • accent on bags, purses and pouches

Benefits of FPP Templates

Using FPP Templates to make Herringbone Strips is great for the following reasons:

  • no need for overly precise cutting of lots of rectangles ( a relief when working on a smaller scale)
  • no need to sew an accurate 1/4″ seam allowance (just sew on the line)
  • lovely and precise blocks
  • create perfectly straight strips
  • make strips as long as required
  • ideal for larger sized units AND when working on a smaller scale

  • Another wonderful demonstration Victoria. If I wanted to produce a longer strip to use as a border, would you recommend gluing several templates together first and using or sewing individual herringbone strips and then joining to required length needed? I will order your templates. I already have the Flying Geese templates and hope to incorporate into a project in the near future.

    • Thanks so much for watching the demo! Glad you enjoyed watching 🙂 If you are looking to use the design for a border, I think I would be tempted to make a longer strip. That way you are avoiding additional bulky seams. The pdf has some instructions for joining strips together, but they have been designed so that you essentially overlap the seam allowances to continue the design.
