Pocket Mug Rugs volume 2 – Celebrations 1

Is it time to brighten up your tea break?
Looking for a small fun project?
Want to make something unique for a sewing group project swap?

'Mug Rugs (vol 2) - Celebrations 1' might just be the collection you are looking for!

Volume 2 of the Pocket Mug Rugs series of designs includes pattern pieces to make four great mini quilt designs. There is a design for four different celebrations that many of us commemorate throughout the year: Valentine’s Day, Easter, Halloween and Christmas.

These Pocket Mug Rug projects are a really creative way of adding a little joy to your tea break! Mug Rugs are also great to give as a gift to someone special or as a small make for a quilt group swap.

These Mug Rugs all feature a slip pocket that is ideal for a little packet of biscuits or even stashing something essential like a small pair of sewing scissors or your glasses!

The FPP ‘Pocket Mug Rug (vol 2) Celebrations 1’ pattern is available as either a downloadable pdf* or printed paper pattern. Each version of the pattern includes full sized pattern pieces for the FPP blocks plus illustrated step-by-step instructions for turning the blocks into Mug Rugs.

Mug rug designs to help you commemorate throughout the year

The pattern comes with some great designs that are based around four of the big celebrations across the year: Valentine’s Day, Easter, Halloween and Christmas.

Valentine’s Day of course is all about the romance. With that in mind it was hard not to include a heart, a beautiful flower and a love note!

Easter egg hunts were a real highlight of my childhood (and of course when our children were little) so it was only right that an Easter basket was the main feature block on the Easter Mug Rug. This Mug Rug also features a sweet little bunny and a carrot for a healthy non chocolate treat!

The Halloween Mug Rug features a witches hat, a (not so scary looking) ghost and a spooky pair of eyes (which also look amazing in lime green…just ask Adelle one of my testers).

If you know me, you know that I love Christmas. If you really know me, you know that I would be happy designing exclusively Christmas patterns! I think however that you would all be very bored of me very quickly if that were the case! All that aside, the Christmas Mug Rug was a joy to see come together. I have incorporated a wreath with a bow, a little tree and a present. All fabulous blocks for Christmas.

Each of the main blocks on the right hand side of the mug rugs measures 6″ finished, so they are also great for adding to other patchwork and quilting projects that you might have in mind!

How to make a Mug Rug

The Pocket Mug Rugs are primarily made using the Foundation Paper Piecing (FPP) technique. This is a great skill that allows you to create intricate designs that would be really difficult to achieve using standard piecing.

If this skill is new to you then don’t worry, this pattern includes three pages of illustrated step-by-step instructions to help you learn how to do FPP.

The instructions also show you how to add binding to your mug rug. If you’re struggling with this a little, then check out the video I have on YouTube that shows you one technique for adding binding to a smaller project such as this.

Useful tools for making a Celebrations Mug Rug

Here are some links to a few of the tools that I use when doing FPP and making the Mug Rugs…I really wouldn’t be without them!

If you click on any of the buttons or images below and buy the products, I will receive a few pence commission from Amazon as an affiliate, don’t worry, you will pay the same price regardless.

Add a Quarter Ruler

I use my add a quarter ruler (and my add an eighth ruler) every time I do FPP!

Clover Glass Head Quilters Pins

I think that Pym glass head quilting pins are the ideal length and thickness for patchwork.

I use this glue every time I add my first piece of fabric (and for so many other things!)

Sewing clips are always useful for so many different projects, not just patchwork!

this is not the exact listing for the clips I bought, but these are very well reviewed
