Vinyl Front Project Bag Hack – Using the Make Time Quilt Blocks
Here’s a quick hack using my Vinyl Front Project Bag pattern and the Make Time Quilt blocks.
I’ll be totally honest and say that I had a load of fabric left over from making my blocks for the Make Time Quilt. I also wanted to make a little keepsake for the other three designers that I worked with on this project, so I decided to do a little mash-up between the two patterns!
Here are the Vinyl Front Project Bags that I came up with:

My Vinyl Front Project Bags are designed to be able to make use of orphan quilt blocks, or indeed quilt blocks that have been made specifically. Click below to read more about Vinyl Front Project Bags and watch the YouTube demo video.
Using a Single 6" block
If you have decided to feature any one of the 6″ blocks in your Project Bag then things are nice and simple. You just have to make your block and follow the instructions as they are written.
Here I have made a Medium Vinyl Front Project Bag featuring Lou Orth’s Get Snippy 6″ Block.

Looks pretty great, don’t you think?
You can also use any of the other 6″ quilt blocks from the Make Time pattern bundle (or any other 6″ block of course!)
Here are the other 6″ blocks that feature as part of the Make Time Quilt project:
Using Two 6" blocks
If you want to use two 6″ quilt blocks side by side, again, it’s super easy. All you need to do is ignore the cutting instructions for the two Side Sashing Strips and join the two 6″ blocks together. Then you just add the Top and Bottom Sashing Strips as per the instructions.
Here I have made a Medium Vinyl Front Project Bag featuring two of Jo Westfoot’s Thread Spools 6″ blocks, side by side.

You can double up on any of the 6″ quilt blocks from the Make Time pattern bundle (like I did) or feature two different blocks to create something unique to you!
Using a 12" x 6" Quilt Block
There are not so many landscape 12″x6″ quilt blocks out on the quilting world, but the Make Time Quilt features the ‘Smell the Roses’ block by Nicola Dodds.
As this quilt block can be used in a landscape orientation, I thought it would look great as part of a Vinyl Front Project Bag.

If you’d also like to feature this block in a Vinyl Front Project Bag, here’s a little hack for the cutting instructions.
When cutting out the rectangles for the ‘Smell the Roses’ block, change the top and bottom rectangles to the following:
- Top Rectangle – 12.5″ x 3.5″
- Bottom Rectangle – 12.5″ x 2.5″
You can then piece the block following Nicola’s instructions. Just remember to use the larger rectangle at the top of the block and the smaller rectangle at the bottom to ensure that the roses sit nicely on the front of the project bag.

Not got your pattern yet?
If you’ve not bought the Vinyl Front Project Bag pattern yet, you can click below to find out more. Remember, if you’d like to make the version with a feature block you can use any block you like (there’s a different size of project bag to work with a variety of quilt blocks).
If you’d like to use any of the Make Time quilt blocks, like in this tutorial, you can also buy a copy of the pattern bundle below. The individual blocks will be available for sale from each of the designers from the end of October 2025.
